Our Basenjis

In 1980 we bought our first beautiful Basenji r/w Enzio. In 1982 we bought the second r/w male Basenji Fucino. We decided to build a Basenji Dog Friendship with two un-castrated males.

How does a Basenji dog friendship come about?

The new one tests the elder one

In the case of dogs of an unequal age, the older dog will not under any circumstances accept the younger one happily or right away. There can be many reasons for this. There can be many reasons for this, for instance old household privileges which cause jealousy, or the older dog is no longer accustomed to living in a pack.

Man has become the exclusive pack-partner which is, in fact, an unnatural situation for the dog, because we people are substitute parents and carry the responsibility for the dog all his life. Other reasons are not as serious and can be learned by each dog owner after studying the behavior of his dogs.

For a time the two-year-old behaved like a puppy and I therefore also treated him like one. The deciding day came  when the elder one adopted the younger, learned his father role and lead the pack, a good qualification for a beginning dog-friendship.

A friendship was born between Enzio and Fuzzy, which lasted several years in contradiction to all prior warnings about Basenji males. The fundamental opinion was to cohabit only a male and a female dog. It’s true there is no easy going with more than one dog. In retrospect I can say that much good luck was at play when I decided to throw caution to the wind and boldly, being not a breeder, elected to keep two un-castrated males. My husband and I experienced with great happiness the emergence and fulfillment of a Basenji dog friendship. But it is clear that  Basenjis love to have a companion. Basenjis  are dogs to live in the middle of action or to be  in a pack. They should not have to be  alone  for several hours at home. We learned meanwhile that it is advantageous for this race the keep more than one, desirable from the Basenji's perspective.

BASENJIs in a PACK

If you wish to start building a pack it is advantageous for this race. Life in a pack is the natural way of life of Basenjis. More than one Basenji corresponds to their original life in Africa, desirable from the Basenji's perspective. It is quite possible to keep two or more of them together.  Playing ranking fights were trained in the  basenji family  and the  training  by the basenji parents is the best way to start building a pack. Any attempts by the young dogs to alter the pecking order are strictly corrected by their parents or with pack. The first obligation of the owner of a new basenji pup is to establish his position. The owner’s clear and determined dominance, based on the Basenji pack rules, will ease the pup into its proper place.

These reports are very helpful for Basenji owners, who like to build a pack with basenjis

Ranking: Who is the leader of the pack?

The relationship between man and dog has to be clearly established. My advice is to train the dogs from the beginning with love but also with firm consistency. Only then will you achieve the needed and natural authority over them and you will become the leader of the pack. Playing the Ranking game is a very good way to be in a pack and to train survival The game of achieving dominance serves as survival skill in dog fights and surely is a prerequisite for a successful dog friendship. It is possible nearly with every dogs, but they must know each other and their place in the pack. When they started ranking-fights at me,  I stopped with the commanded NO. I'm the leader of the pack. The human carries the responsibility.

Tasks and games for dogs can be learned in dog training classes. There the Basenjis also have an opportunity to meet other kinds of dogs and to learn the original ranking system.

A Basenji train and becomes the leader

The Basenji train and lead without beeing authoritarian, the Basenji must be self-confident to lead the pack. In a special situation is the Basenji female or  male  the leader.

Survival training

The small one gets nipped severely and howls audibly.

But now he can also bite and does it too.

The older male teach him the submissive behavior.

And, as one can see, that works out just fine.

The result is a dog friendship.

Playing the Ranking game is a very good way to be in a pack and to train survival. At play, the younger learned the behavior, necessary for survival. He learned subordination, which also included providing grooming service to the elder dog.

Cleaning the eyes

My first dog friendship lasted throughout the dogs lives. My dogs died aged 14 ½ and 13 ½ . They suffered from cancer.  When the cancer treatment didn’t work I had to make my decision. I had promised the dogs they wouldn’t have to suffer. I missed them very much for a long time. Basenji age

1995 my husband and I decided to buy a new Basenji pack to continue our hobby. We bought two males Mokoondi’s Azande and Angori, littermates, from the breeder, Mrs. Dagmar Wagner.  mokoondi.com Since 1996  these beautiful littermates belong to me, Mokoondi’s Azande a wonderful tricolour Basenji male and Mokoondi’s  Angori a wonderful red and white male.

We found out that littermates were very good companions from the beginning of their life. The two had a wonderful playtime and training with their four littermates together with their dog parents in an originally Basenji Family. The breeder trained them well to live in in a new home.

 Playtime

The puppies share any nonsense and they have a lot of silly ideas.

It's hard work  to train  two puppies of the same age, much more than a younger and older one. The overriding rule, which I have discovered, is that both dogs must be handled simultaneously. They must be fed bowl to bowl next to each other, petted one on the left, one on the right, and with some skill both taken simultaneously up on the lap for play, little Monsters they are. They were given a big basket to share but each one owned  several small baskets.

Angori and Azande are playing the ranking fight.

Angori wants to provoke.     Azande growls but then lets him, still growling, go on and teaches him to submit.

At the end of the fight starts the begin of a Basenji Dog Friendship,  this is a good way for a successful  friendship. The deciding day came  when the elder one adopted the younger, learned his father role and lead the pack. At play, the younger learned the behavior, necessary for survival. He learned subordination, which also included providing grooming service to the elder dog. The dominant role of Azande is developed as he gets  the grooming service cleaning the ear from Angori.

It's fascinating to watch them play. To build a pack together with guest Basenjis is a lot of fun and friendship between the owners starts meanwhile.

The pack is built, the Basenjis trust each other in a Dog Friendship. The owner become the leader of the pack, his social role for the dogs.
