Please note that this is a summary of a continuing exchange of experiences between Basenji owners and frequently supplemented with useful information and specifics. I collect all the health related information I am able to get and want to share it with all interested Basenji companions. hints
Whenever your dog is ill or you have questions, please first consult your veterinarian or an Animal homeotherapist.
The Basenji is predisposed to some genetic ailments because the gene pool was limited to just a few dogs when the breed was introduced to the West from Africa. Meanwhile responsible Basenji Companions imported Basenjis from Africa to improve the breeding stock. basenji.org/african/project.htm This is my concern; please get only purebreds and investigate their breeding lineage.

The most important condition for healthy Basenjis is to carefully choose the right breeding lineage and therefore the breeding dogs should be tested for and certified free of well known hereditary diseases by a veterinarian. Breeding of healthy dogs is the central importance. Dogs with hereditary illnesses should not be used as breeding stock. It is therefore recommended to ask the breeder if the dogs stems from a line in which allergy, hip dysplasia, cancer fanconi persistent pupil membranes or progressive retinal atrophy have frequently occurred. If you can’t get this information, I am of the opinion that you should look for another breeder.
It is also recommended to ask for the lifespan of dogs in the breeding line. One should also take care that the upper and lower teeth are complete in a scissor bite. It is necessary to control the teeth from time to time. Being well informed and taking good care of your dog’s health is of ever increasing importance for man and dog.
